The scarce book contains a lengthy essay on Spare by Semple and is profusely illustrated with full color plates and black and white reproductions of Spare's art including many images unique to this volume. The book is sold in mint condition in a pristine dust jacket .
Gavin Semple is a brilliant writer, period. This is Spare for adepts, mages and layfolk, all pomp and obfuscating language swept aside for a remarkable profile of the finest occult draughtsman of the last century. Herein lies the foundation of chaos magick as it is known today. Austin Osman Spare created his own form of magickal thought after being rejected by Crowley for being a "black" magician. Through automatic drawing and sigilwork he created a form of magickal expression through his breathtaking artwork, many examples of which are reproduced in color and black and white. This slim volume is a cleverly disguised tome well worth seeking out.

The Witches' Sabbath & Axiomata
Austin Osman Spare
Published by Fulgur 1992. First Edition, Hardcover. Limited Edition of just 502 of the true original first issue. Shortly after publication, over half the edition was lost. Nearly 500 sets of unbound sheets were pulped when the printer filed for bankruptcy and his warehouse emptied. Original black cloth with gilt designs. Original Talismanic bookmark. Bound back to back -ie each starts at a different end of the book, with each finishing in the middle. A truly beautiful book and a MUST for the serious AOS collection.
In the early 1950’s Austin Osman Spare experienced a renaissance in manuscript. Since the appearance of The Anathema of Zos in 1927 the development of the philosophy of Zos was truly occult. Although AOS had made several attempts at writing in the intervening years, it was the insistent requests of his close friends that provoked his astonishing literary resurgence. Lost titles from this period have become part of modern magickal folklore: Logomachy, Fragmenta, The Goetic Grimoire of Zen, and others. Coetaneous with these, The Witches’ Sabbath was definitely intended for publication, but never progressed beyond manuscript. It was later selectively represented by Kenneth Grant in his oeuvre, but is presented here, in context, for the first time. The remarkable Axiomata has never appeared in print before, and those already familiar with Spare’s work will immediately recognize recurrent themes that have been given greater depth and new perspectives.
As an extension of his spirit this edition seeks an “inbetweeness” quality. Placing the two tracts dos-a-dos draws on an old method of publishing and a new method of magic. The pragmatic axioms and evocative prayers represent the twin forces of nature: the masculine and the feminine, back to back. The text illustrations, from a 1952 sketchbook, weave between image and imagination: a dancing line that partners the conscious and subconscious mind in equal measure.

Zos Speaks.
Encounters with Austin Osman Spare
by Kenneth and Steffi Grant
Out of print in any edition – and not likely to be reprinted according to Fulgur
First edition 1998, printed by Fulgur. The book is quarter-bound in leather with gilt devices to spine and front board and it comes housed in a black slipcase, with dust-jacket.
This is an absolutely stunning book. The material is everything the serious student had hoped it would be, the illustrations are vivid and well reproduced, the binding good and tight. Zos Speaks is an investment for any intermediate or advanced student of Magick. The wealth of information found in this book is absolutely brilliant and much of this material can’t be found elsewhere. Over fifty years ago, Kenneth and Steffi Grant met the artist Austin Osman Spare. A mutual passion for weird art brought them together at a time when Spare, in the final decade of his life, had turned again to writing about his other passion – the occult. Zos Speaks! is an account of their meetings with Spare. In addition to the numerous letters and diary entries from the period this book also contains Spare’s last great literary works: The Logomachy, The Zoetic Grimoire and The Living Word. Here may be found a unique insight into Spare’s method of working with familiar spirits, “Delphic Oracles” and other strange formulae, including the legendary Witches’ Sabbath that Zos claimed to have attended on many occasions.
Please note that this is a very heavy book !

A Kaleidoscope of Facsimile Holograph Letters to his friend, the Poet and Painter Vera Wainwright
Asssembled by Kenneth and Steffi Grant
In his later creative life, Spare was sought out by artists and writers eager to receive insights of experience from the ‘Walworth Road Surrealist.’ And yet, there were very few indeed who became good friends. Vera Wainwright was one such friend. She arrived in Spare’s life as the clouds of war cast a long shadow over South London, and sought him out amid the debris of the blitz to offer her support and affection. Dearest Vera is an account of their friendship told by Spare himself, through the many letters sent to his new pupil.
Those familiar with Spare will find new insights to his life and theories on art, while newcomers will discover an eccentric and gifted artist sharing a lifetime’s experience with an eager pupil. Compiled by Kenneth and Steffi Grant, this kaleidoscope of correspondence is a rare treat, and a major resource for those seeking to better understand this complex and neglected genius.

The Witches’ Sabbath and Axiomata
Austin Osman Spare
Fulgur 2007 edition.
Bound in quarter black morocco.
Quarto 296mm x 210mm 64 pages
2 tipped-in colour frontispieces 32 full page illustrations
Quarter morocco, dust-jacket, lined-slipcase
Strictly limited to 91 hand-numbered copies, signed by Kenneth and Steffi Grant.
In 1992, Fulgur published their first title by Austin Spare. Two typescripts, one of aphorisms (which they titled Axiomata) and another giving a synopsis of The Witches’ Sabbath were published dos-a-dos, or back to back, in a single volume. The work was illustrated with two tipped-in frontispieces and a selection of dramatic sketches from an unpublished sketchbook by Spare.
Shortly after publication, over half the edition was lost. Nearly 500 sets of unbound sheets were pulped when the printer filed for bankruptcy and his warehouse emptied. Within a few years, the original published price was eclipsed by secondhand values and the title has been scarce since the late 1990s. In 2001, the binder Fulgur used nearly ten years earlier contacted them to say they had discovered a batch of unbound sheets, totalling nearly 100 copies.
Since this version of The Witches’ Sabbath first appeared in 1992, the publication of Zos Speaks! has documented in detail the creation of this important tract nearly 50 years after it was written. In the summer of 1951 Austin Osman Spare was invited by Michael Hall to submit an illustrated article for his bi-monthly publishing venture, The London Mystery Magazine. Working together, Kenneth Grant and Austin Spare developed a potent formula of word and image that applied the process of the Death Posture to group ritual; specifically within the context of the Sabbatic tradition. As a collaboration between two of the most influential minds of twentieth-century occultism, it represents a powerful evocation of Spare’s essential doctrine.
This “new/old” edition is one of the very limited re-issue of The Witches’ Sabbath and Axiomata, signed by Kenneth and Steffi Grant. Just ninety-one copies have been made up from the original sheets, with a new title page added and colour frontispieces printed with the vibrancy of modern colour reproduction. This edition is bound in quarter black morocco, dust-jacket and slipcase in absolute top quality.

The Valley of Fear
Austin Osman Spare
This is the signed Deluxe edition of only 93 copies. Decorative endpapers, bound in quarter morocco leather with dust-jacket and lined slipcase. Printed in full colour !
It is sometimes observed that there are periods in our lives when the world around us seems to conspire against our most vital interests. For Austin Osman Spare, the darkest of these periods began in 1924. Then recently seperated from his wife and living in reduced circumstances, the critical failure of his publishing venture The Golden Hind triggered a deep personal crisis for our artist. Disconnected from an evolving art world, Spare’s creative energies turned inward and he began a series of extraordinarily powerful works intended to fully capture his bitter desperation and fragile hope.
As one of these major ‘lost’ works The Valley of Fear is an unpublished sketchbook of 20 vigourous yet haunting studies from this bleak and difficult period. Designed as a companion volume to The Book of Ugly Ecstasy (Fulgur, 1996) here the delicately tinted original drawings have been reproduced in full colour. The work has been augmented by an introductory essay by Robert Ansell in which the metaphysical themes are explored and Spare’s methodologies for creating states of magical aesthesis for his audience are examined and discussed.

Evolution Vol. One
From Influx to Automatic Drawing
Austin Osman Spare and Poetry, the Particular Influence of William Blake, W.B. Yeats and John Gray
Limited Edition of only 225 numbered copies
Stephen Pochin takes a close look at Spare's interactions with contemporary poets, and shows how their influences had an effect on Spare's own work, in particular, the early books that Spare produced. Pochin suggests that it was through W.B. Yeats that Spare became aware of the meaning of Blake's work and that this had a profound effect upon the development of Spare's magico-mystical system. He also offers some illuminating insight into Spare's relationship with John Gray, who is generally taken as the model for Dorian Gray in Oscar Wilde's story. Pochin concludes with an examination of Spare's development of the Alphabet of Desire and his exploration of the inner realms of consciousness.
All copies are printed upon high quality archival paper but, there are variations. Some are printed on a slightly yellowish goatskin parchment paper, others on white 100% cotton wove and some (including this copy) are printed upon 100% cotton smooth white paper. A small label on the rear pastedown identifies the paper used and the original seller.
